The Brand Is Real, and Brands Cost Money

Ask somebody on the street to name a company that does legal work for consumers and LegalZoom is what usually comes back, a position built over twenty-odd years of television spots and sheer transaction volume. For an owner who wants a vendor that the bank, the bookkeeper, and the in-laws all recognize on sight, that position counts for something. We are not going to argue that it counts for nothing.

We would only point out what it costs per year.

$249, Auto-Renewing, With Nothing to Soften Year One

Registered agent service from LegalZoom runs $249 a year. When we checked in July 2026 there was no opening discount and no promotional tier to be found; the figure is flat and the subscription renews automatically. That last part deserves a moment of attention. Automatic renewal means the second $249 arrives whether or not you remembered buying the first one.

Set It Beside North Dakota's Own Numbers

Read the top three rows together and you have North Dakota's whole routine cost of keeping an LLC compliant and correctly represented: ten dollars to change who speaks for you, fifty to file the yearly report, fifty more only if it lands after the deadline. A single LegalZoom year outruns that entire ladder more than twice over.

The ten dollars comes from § 10-01.1-03(1)(c), which sets the statement of change fee and carves out exactly one free case: an address correction that the Secretary of State judges to have resulted from rezoning or a postal reassignment. Anybody actually appointing a different agent pays the ten.

A caveat on the word cheap, since a table like that invites it. BetterLegal publishes $90 a year, below our $99, so the lowest sticker in North Dakota is not ours to claim. What we do claim is that few published North Dakota rates go under $99 and that ours never becomes a different number at renewal.

The Question the Price Poses

North Dakota asks the same four things of a $249 agent and a $99 one: an in-state address, availability during business hours, acceptance of anything served, and prompt delivery to you. Nothing in the Registered Agents Act scales duty to price. Whether a name everybody recognizes justifies $150 more per year is a real question with a personal answer, and we would rather you answered it with both figures in front of you.
